Welcome to Secret Breakfast / An exclusive newsletter, the best place to start your day with food noise, wrong resolutions, and green honey

A flipped funhouse. No ammonium chloride around.

Hi there!

I hope you had a stellar start to the year and said something smart when your significant other asked for your 2024 resolutions in front of your closest friends and relatives.

Me, I like dedicating every year to learning something new about something. There was the Year of the Fermentation (2018), the Mahler Symphonies Year (2020, sabotaged by Covid-19), and this 2024 that started as the Year of the Bourgogne, but will probably pivot to something else because I’m an Aries and Mercury’s retrograde this year (and budget cuts will be trending in the following months too).

You’ll probably ask me if I’m in the States or something since it’s Wednesday in Europe and Secret Breakfast publishing day is supposed to be Tuesday.

Hey, I’m in the middle of nowhere, sieged by my family, after a week I’ve been cooking for 7 to 14 people per day, four times a day: allow me a break.

PS: when working on resolutions, remember that the goal is not to run a Michelin-star restaurant at the end of 2024, the goal is to take time for cooking every week.

PPS: The Book and The Missing Ingredient sections will come back next week.

FOOD FOR LATER

What if ‘Food Noise’ Is Just … Hunger?
Kate Manne / The New York Times

The concept of "food noise" has gained popularity on social media, referring to the experience of thinking about food, longing for it, and planning meals. But hunger, appetite, and cravings should be treated as problems to be solved while accepting our natural drives.
