Welcome to Secret Breakfast / An exclusive newsletter, but this week mostly a za'atar spiced postcard from Jerusalem

Early morning. Pitas hanging out at a restaurant

Hi there!

This week I had two choices: writing a pre-cooked newsletter, or improvising while traveling.

I think I like surprises more, so this issue will be “different”…

I’m currently in Israel and I believe one life is not enough to absorb all the different food cultures that make this place unique and alive.

In ancient times it was believed that Jerusalem was the center of the world: the perfect place in the middle of Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Somehow it is.

It’s clearly something different, you can feel it. For now, for my first 24 hours here, I just can share a few pictures. Hope you don't mind!

Piero

PS: I’m afraid next week’s issue will be Middle-Eastern cooking based 😬

THE BOOK

A glance of Tel Aviv

★★★

This city is currently my next stop. This book is about what we relate to “Israeli flavor” plus it has a few recipes by local restaurateurs and connoisseurs, reflecting the diverse spirit of Tel Aviv's cuisine.

RANDOM ACTS OF HUNGER

This is the space where I share some food (un)related stuff of my week

📍Phil Rosenthal’s Tel Aviv’s favorite places (Somebody Feed Phil, s01e03) 🥚Never heard before: Israeli breakfast  🍳Other Israeli breakfasts (★recipe) 🍅Shakshuka (★recipe) 🥙Make your falafel (★recipe, and recipe for the baked version we do not endorse) 📖World Cup Wishes by Eshkol Nevo is a good novel, but you’ll never want to visit Haifa after that 🍿Benedict Cumberbatch voicing this documentary about Jerusalem will make your toes curl (wait for the words “Jebusites” or “Yeru-shalem”)

FOOD FOR LATER

This dispatch - from my archive - is from Syria, but Za'atar spice mix is essential in the Middle-East. Here are a few ideas on how to blend it into your cooking (★recipes).

Last week's most clicked link was the one about the 10 rules for working under pressure by a graphic prop designer. And that's all for today.
